Children's book

"Alfred the Earth Driller Goes to the Siljan Ring" is the story of a little boy who wants to know more about what's underground, where the worms live. The book, which is richly illustrated, is in A5 format with a 24-page cover. The book is designed to stimulate children's curiosity, joy and inspiration. Orders can be placed via a separate order form on this website.

The idea for the book was born at Visit Dalarna's work shop on Siljan Geopark in the winter of 2022/2023 and is based on the author's own story (see below). The work on the book has included a solid investigation work in the form of literature studies, field trips, etc. The investigation work also forms the basis for lectures on the meteorite impact and the geology around Siljan.

The book is produced in collaboration with Bulla's Jonas Jansson (illustrator), Sara Axelsson, Spira Studio (graphic designer) and Karin Runesson, Volt Biologi. The book is printed by Stuart Print.

This picture shows where the inspiration for the children's book came from.

The year was 1978. From the left is Alfred Johansson, soil driller at the then Sundsvall band district, track guard (unknown). To the right is a young Mats Larsson, assistant to the district's driller.

Soil Driller is the professional title that preceded today's Field Geotechnician. The title existed mainly in the SJ geotechnical department until the 1980s. The work then was mainly a manual work with probing and sampling. During the same period, SJ had its own geotechnical designation sheets that were adapted to manual work.

Alfred was Mats' teacher in geotechnical engineering between 1978 and 1981.
